It was cold and rainy when I left the house on a recent
morning. It felt like those fall mornings when I’m glad that the brutal summer
heat is gone and winter will soon take over. I added extra layers and grabbed
an umbrella. Two hours later, the sun emerged to brighten the day and our
spirits and encouraged me to shed some of the layers. Maybe an early spring
would arrive soon. Two more hours and the day was too warm for even the
lightweight long sleeve tee shirt that was my only remaining layer. Yikes! I
needed short sleeves on a day that started out feeling cold. It now felt like
early summer. One more evening meeting and I would call it a day. When I got
out of that last gathering, the temperatures had dropped from 70s down to 40s.
I didn’t even have enough layers with me to keep me warm. I ran to my little
economy car and hoped that blocking the breeze would make enough difference to
warm me up while the car took several minutes to warm itself up. I headed home
knowing I had been through four seasons in one day. The weirdest part was that
no one seemed to really notice the dramatic changes. Maybe this is our new
normal.
