I’m learning to live
a life that is both fierce and tender. I think it means facing challenges even
when the odds are against me while still being gentle in my day-to-day.
Thankfully, I’m not alone in this endeavor. The world offers many opportunities
to put the puzzle together.  Most
recently with two people who are ahead of me on the path and who manage to turn
serious health challenges into nutrition for their humility and dignity.

On our way to lunch,
my friend Ed gave me a pitcher. I loved it. It was something I would have
chosen for myself. He thought it would look good in my home. In my servant
leadership class a little while later, Mary Claire brought daffodils from her
yard to share with class. We were delighted. I put mine in my new pitcher for
the drive home and realized they looked great together with their earthy sweet
lines and colors. I put them in my living room to brighten my spirit for as
long as the flowers last, and to help me become fierce and tender for long
after that.
