Everyone seems to be celebrating Juneteenth.

One more change in America. A good change. In fact, we should have all been celebrating the end of slavery for the past 155 years.

Juneteenth isn’t just for Black people anymore. White friends want to celebrate the holiday. Latinx friends want to celebrate it, too. We’re still dealing with covid-19 and should keep social distance, but we can find some kind of way to celebrate.

We’ve traveled such a long way on this covid-19/police brutality bus. And the trip isn’t done. We still have many stops to make at courtrooms and police stations and senate chambers. And many, many public places. From parks to capitol buildings. Many stops to make. A lot of work to do. We can take a day to celebrate Juneteenth.

And when we’re done. Black people will have what white people have.

Money for holiday sales. Most important is spending money. Check out all the holiday sales. Memorial Day. Independence Day. Labor Day. We love summer holidays. We’ll gladly take one more summer holiday.

Black people are not fully equal, yet. Not until we see a full on Juneteenth sale at the car dealerships and furniture stores and shopping malls. Then we’ll know white people fully accept Black people into the joys of capitalism.

I wonder if they’ll all accept it the way white people accept it now – the joys of capitalism. I wonder if people will look for something sacred in the middle of the holy-days. Can Juneteenth remain a celebration of freedom? Will it morph into just another summer sale?
